Guide · Painted portrait
A painted portrait from a photo: what exists, what it costs and which photo to use.
Turning a photo of the two of you into a painting is one of the most requested anniversary and wedding gifts. There are three ways to do it, with very different prices and timelines. This guide walks through each one, plainly.
1. A painter, by hand, on canvas
The classic route: you send the photo, an artist paints it in oil or acrylic and ships the canvas. A commissioned couple portrait usually starts around $90 for small digital-to-print pieces from marketplace artists and runs into the hundreds for real canvas, with two to eight weeks plus shipping.
You pay for a one-of-a-kind object and the artist's hand. Ask to see past work with real people, agree on how many revisions are included and get the deadline in writing if there is a date to meet.
2. A digital illustrator
An illustrator draws from your photo on a computer and delivers a file to print. It is usually cheaper and faster than canvas, days to a few weeks, and styles vary a lot: digital watercolour, clean line, caricature.
A good choice if you want the style of a specific artist you admire. The final file is yours to print at any size.
3. A digital painting made by AI
The newest option: an image model paints the scene from your photos in a minute, keeping faces, expression and pose. It is the fastest and cheapest, and you can see the result before paying.
The difference is that there is no human artist: it is a digital painting generated by AI. For many people that doesn't matter, because what moves them is recognising the two of them; for others, the artist's hand is the gift. Neither is wrong.
Which photo works best
Whatever the route, the photo decides half the result. Pick one where faces are front-on or three-quarter, in natural light, without heavy filters. A phone photo is fine as long as it isn't blurry.
Avoid sunglasses, tiny faces in the frame and very dark shots. If you have several good photos from the same day, send more than one: it helps the painter, or the model, see what you really look like.
Printing and framing
For a wall, 12×16 in or 16×20 in are the common sizes and fit ready-made frames. Print on matte photo paper or cotton rag, which looks more like paint. Photo kiosks and print shops do it same day.
If it is a gift with a date, printing is the bottleneck: leave a day spare, or give the file with a card and the promise of the frame.
Questions
- How much does a painted portrait from a photo cost?
- Hand-painted on canvas, from the high tens into the hundreds of dollars, with weeks of wait. Digital illustration by an artist usually costs less and takes days. An AI painting takes minutes and costs far less; on Amevoli the preview is free.
- Can I use a phone photo?
- Yes. What matters is a sharp face, front-on or three-quarter, in good light. Avoid blurry, very dark or heavily filtered photos.
- Does the AI painting look like us?
- With a good photo, yes: the model keeps faces, expression and pose and changes the setting and light. That is why it helps to see it before paying and swap the photo if it doesn't look like you.
