How to write an anniversary message that sounds like you.

The internet is full of ready-made lines, and the person reading knows all of them. A good message has one thing no list has: a detail only the two of you know. This guide is about finding that detail and writing around it.

The rule: a detail, not an adjective

"You're amazing" works for anyone. "You stopped the car in the rain to move a snail off the road" works for one person. Before writing, remember a scene: the first date, a bad day that turned good, a habit. The whole message can be about that scene. That's what makes someone keep a note for ten years.

The structure that works

Three sentences are enough. The first says the scene. The second says what it means today. The third looks ahead, without a grand promise. Example: "A year ago you laughed at my playlist in a coffee line. Today the playlist is ours and so is the line. Here's to more years of lines."

One year

The first anniversary is about the beginning, so the scene is easy: how you met. "A year since we got lost in the old town and didn't care. Turns out I like getting lost with you." Short, specific, no "forever".

Two or three years

By now the scene is from the routine, and the routine is what's worth telling: "Three years of you singing the wrong words in the car. I don't correct you because it's my favourite part of the drive." Talking about the ordinary is how you say you pay attention.

Five years

Five years have a bad day in the middle. Mentioning it is what gives weight: "Five years, one apartment, one move, one month we almost didn't make it. We made it. I'd choose it again, that month included."

Ten years or more

Here the scene can be small on purpose: "Ten years and you still leave the last slice for me. It's the things like that I stay for." After that long, the big things are understood; the small ones are what moves.

If you want more than a message

Sometimes the right line deserves a better place than a text. Amevoli takes three to six photos and two answers of yours and composes a painted portrait, a short film with music and a poster with your names and the year it started: your line becomes the line on the poster. The free part is ready in a minute; the full timeline costs $7.99, once.

What to avoid

Copied lines (they will search for it). "Other half", "soulmate", "forever and always". Very long messages: if it's more than a paragraph, cut the part that would work for any couple. And don't apologise for writing badly; writing like yourself is the point.

Questions

Is a short anniversary message okay?
Yes, and it's usually better. One scene and one line beat any long text. "One year since the coffee line. Still the best line I've ever stood in." is done.
What if I'm not good with words?
Don't write beautifully; write truthfully. A scene told simply, the way you'd say it, is worth more than a polished sentence. If you're stuck, answer two questions in writing: how you met and one moment you never forget. That's already the message.
Can I send the message with a gift?
Yes, and it works well: the message on the card, the gift in hand. If the gift is made from your photos, the message can be the line on the poster.
